Swim Homework: Levels 1 & 1.5

One of the ways to get the MOST out of swimming lessons is to take time to practice at home other days of the week. After each lesson your child’s instructor will give them one skill to work on for the week that they can practice at home.

For swimmers who are Level 1 or Level 1.5, try out some of these homework ideas to help your child build muscle memory and grow more comfortable in the water!

Holding breath in the bathtub

Put a diving toy at the bottom and ask your child to put their face in and see how long they can hold it

Float in the bathtub

Focus on ears in the water and chin/belly up

Straight leg kicks on the floor

While your child lays on their belly on the floor, prompt them to make Superman arms and lift their legs in the air as they make small kicks in the air. Can also practice straight leg kicks while sitting in a chair.

Rollovers on the floor

Have your child lay on their belly with head down in a head sandwich. Prompt them to roll over to float on their back and repeat

Back floating

On the floor, have your child spread out their arms and legs like a starfish, keeping their chin and belly up

Motorboat Arms

Make a head sandwich while standing, sitting or laying on the floor

Elementary backstroke (Level 1.5)

Chicken, airplane, soldier - laying on a bed with legs hanging over the side or standing up with arms only or add 1 leg in
