Kids Rules for Water Safety

May is National Water Safety Month! We have two main water safety rules that we teach kids in swimming lessons. These are simple principles that you can reinforce at home when talking at the dinner table or on the way to a pool party.

  1. Never EVER Swim Alone!

No matter how old you are, from a toddler in a bathtub or a teen in a home pool, there should always be someone supervising or a buddy swimming with you!

2. Yelp for Help! Then Reach or Throw (Don’t Go)

If someone needs help in the water, we teach kids to YELP for HELP! Call out “Help! Help!” loudly. Then they can REACH out with a pole or pool noodle to pull someone to the side or THROW a floatation device. But kids should never jump in the pool to help another person.

Make water safety a regular conversation with your kids, and make sure THEY know the rules on their own too!
